Zachary Rockman

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours)

I work in the realm of figurative painting. The omnipresence of smartphone technology is hinted at through my source material. The camera is used to collage personal photographs containing recognisable pop-cultural symbols and clothing styles. Underpinned by a desire to map and locate the origins of consumer impulses, my work traverses a range of themes, from the wellness industry to occultism to objects of cultural fetish and spiritual growth. The meshing of personal narratives with popular culture seeks to illuminate the pervasive sense of loneliness and self-absorption found in contemporary Western society.
