VCA ART 2021

Jah Maskell

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours)

I am interested in evacuating the foundations of what constitutes a home – the paradox of comfort, the stress of childhood, the fear of failure. In my work, the teachings of generational trade skills and working of materials such as steel and animal hide merge in sculpture, video and installation. I examine the sourcing of materials, techniques of production and the sweat of labour through the tapered, contorted, stuffed and posed forms of the work – an autobiographical homestead that places viewers in the position of voyeur. Actually, I just want to make my mum happy.
