Through painting over old photographs, my work seeks to express the sentimental relationship we might have to the past. I consider memories as a driving force and infinite source of inspiration. Influenced by Gerhard Richter’s abstract series of photo-paintings, I experiment with masking and exposing layers of a personal memory by working with multi-step techniques, including brushwork and scraping back the image. Using the articulate potential of colours, I allude to emotions such as hope, anger, disbelief and determination. Revisiting events that occurred a decade ago in my life, my work has provided a chance to meditate upon my personal memories. It has given me the opportunity to self-heal and ponder past decisions that are still shaping the present.
