Chrissie Demos

Graduate Certificate of Visual Art

At its core, my work is about human connection. Through observational drawing, I document people in interior spaces, capturing everyday actions and interactions. My portraits reveal solitude, contemplation and, sometimes, a sense of ennui.

Referencing Cindy Sherman’s Film Stills, the subjects of my portraits refuse direct eye contact; their gaze is elusive and introspective. My drawings are evocations of private thoughts, positioning the viewer as an intruder. Questioning notions of voyeurism, my drawings point towards interiority and subjective narratives.

Primarily working in monochrome, with only occasional hints of colour, my recent work comprises multi-panel, large-scale charcoal works. The larger-than-life scale of my figures creates an immersive viewer experience reminiscent of classic cinema and yet contemporary.
