Jackson McLaren

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting)

What are the possibilities of abstraction through painting and textiles? I explore formal concerns of colour, space and surface to materially encode language.

My labour-intensive weaving process informs my painting, using the grid found in the substrate of the hessian material used to weave into as a scaffolding to build the work. The days are collected through colour in a cumulative scroll-like document of passing time. Through repetitive mark-making, this mechanical process is translated through paint, the fallibility of the hand and the meditative rhythm of interior logic banding together to produce work akin to music and atmosphere.
